Cancer Screening Reimbursement Program for Volunteer Fire Departments
A program of the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association and the NC Firefighters Fund. This grant program, created in cooperation with Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, is intended and developed to provide limited reimbursement to Volunteer Fire Departments. The program provides limited funding, upon application, to VFD’s to allow volunteer personnel to go through cancer screening. This is in an effort to provide early cancer detection for firefighters, and based on agreement with BCBS, is intended for volunteer firefighters only.
The NC State Firefighters’ Association in conjunction with the NC Firefighters Fund, a non-profit arm of the NCSFA, recognize our responsibilities in providing support and assistance to our states fire service personnel related to Cancer Prevention and Cancer screening. To the Association, our State and local communities, and the fire departments themselves, our personnel are our most valuable resources. For their families and their community, they need every opportunity to be protected and have prevention opportunities, including early screening for cancer. This means not only providing benefits, but providing programs in areas such as cancer prevention, cancer awareness, and early cancer detection.
It is Blue Cross’s desire to help volunteer firefighters receive this potential lifesaving procedure that many career departments are providing for their members. Totally volunteer departments need only apply as a department, however, combination departments will need to list the volunteer members receiving the screening. We understand these funds may not cover all of your members, but it is our hope that it is enough to help so that you may then be able to cover everyone.
The program will provide reimbursement of cancer screening by a qualified physician, screening company, or medical facility up to $3,000 per Department. Since the grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield is a limited amount, funding will only be provided as long as funds designated for this purpose are available within the NCFF.

Funding is limited, so apply as soon as possible before the grant runs out. Please see the application for important required information to submit after the screening. This is very important so we can apply for more funds to expand the program.
