The Northern Wake Fire Department is seeking an experienced, visionary, and professional leader to serve as the next Fire Chief for our organization. The Fire Chief is appointed and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. The Fire Chief reports directly to the Board President and working along with the Board of Directors, develops the organizational structure required to manage the daily operations of a large combination fire department. The Fire Chief is responsible for appointing qualified individuals to fill the required positions within the organization.
Northern Wake Fire Department serves an 80 square mile response district, located north of the City of Raleigh in the County of Wake. The response district is mostly a suburban/rural density, a bedroom community of approximately 32,000 Wake County citizens. With I-540, Highway 50 and Highway 98 intersecting the response district, many citizens outside of Wake County travel through the district daily, commuting to/from the Triangle. Falls Lake is centrally located within the response district, as well as several State/County Park locations and the Butner-Falls Game land.
Northern Wake Fire Department provides fire protection, first responder (EMT) and specialty rescue services such as surface water rescue, low angle rope rescue and vehicle/machinery rescue. These services are provided out of 5 fire stations, staffed by 36 Full-Time Employees, 15 Part-Time Employees, 72 Volunteer Members and 14 Junior Members. The department responds to over 1,700 calls annually and maintains a Class 3 Public Protection Classification from the North Carolina Department of Insurance. The Class 3 rating applies to all properties within 5-miles of a Northern Wake fire station. The FY22 Operating Budget for Northern Wake Fire Department is $3,884,240.
The position of Fire Chief requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Safety Engineering, Fire Science, Fire Protection Technology, or a related field, plus a minimum of 10-years’ experience in the fire service, with at least 4 of those years serving in a supervisory position.
The Fire Chief must have a desire to be part of a great team of dedicated personnel with the ability to focus on local, regional, and state issues and staffing models. A demonstrated background and understanding of how to successfully lead a combination volunteer and career fire department is a must, along with a broad spectrum of experience in personnel management. The Fire Chief must have a thorough knowledge in budget preparation processes and long-term financial planning, as well as planning and developing annual reports and strategic initiatives for the organization.

Salary Range: $91,000 – $150,856
