JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs difficult protective service work in fire prevention and investigation and related work as apparent or assigned. This position does not perform fire inspections. Work is performed under the general direction of the Fire and Rescue Division Head Performs training for Fire and Life Safety Education.
Investigates fire scenes to include taking photographs and making maps of the scene; interviewing witnesses; collecting physical evidence; and preparing written reports of findings.
Researches state laws and local ordinances related to construction and fire prevention and represents the County in court.
Receives and responds to inquiries from the public and provides public fire education.
Responds to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills, and bomb threats and renders appropriate assistance.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Investigates fire scenes to include taking photographs and making maps of the scene; interviewing witnesses; collecting physical evidence; and preparing written reports of findings. Interprets Federal, State and local laws, codes and ordinances relating to fire safety and prevention.
Conducts educational programs to promote fire safety, life safety and fire prevention.
Prepares required reports and maintains records and files.
Receives and responds to inquiries from the public and provides public fire education.
Conducts fire investigations, fire prevention programs, and performs community services.
Responds to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills, and bomb threats and renders appropriate assistance.
Performs related tasks as required.
Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire investigation and prevention, including inspection, fire hazards and methods of eliminating hazardous conditions; thorough knowledge of the modern principles and practices of fire investigation; thorough knowledge of flammable liquids and gases and hazardous chemicals, their proper use and storage requirements; some knowledge of electrical wiring systems and their capacities; ability to maintain records and prepare detailed technical reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree with coursework in fire science, or related field and considerable experience in fire investigation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must possess or maintain NC Fire Investigation certification.
Must be able to obtain Public Fire Education 1 within the first 12 months of employment.
Must possess a Level II Fire Inspector
Valid North Carolina Class B drivers license.
