RALEIGH -The North Carolina State Firemen’s Association is investigating the possibility of forming a Defined Contribution Plan for fire departments that are non-governmental units.
We are doing this in response to the many requests received from our members.
It is our hope that the creation of this plan will improve recruitment and retention for those eligible departments.
If the plan is well received and we have enough participation the plan should be in place and ready to implement by July 1, 2011.
To help us in the process, please take a few minutes to fill out this on-line survey.
Stay tuned in for updates on the progress of the plan.

In fact, however, so quickly are the three phases accomplished that the pianist rarely has capacity to think, in performance, of each phase separately.

A defined-contribution option could be a meaningful response to the recruitment and retention pressures facing eligible non-governmental fire departments. The key will be making the plan’s costs, employer responsibilities, eligibility rules, and long-term employee value easy to compare with current arrangements. Since the association is investigating the idea following member requests, a clear member-feedback process could help identify the features departments need most and the questions that must be resolved before implementation.
Carlos says
A defined contribution option could give eligible non-governmental departments a clearer framework for offering retirement support while keeping plan administration practical. Because the proposal is responding to member requests, the next useful discussion may be how departments can explain eligibility, employer contributions, vesting, and employee choice in plain language. That clarity matters for recruitment, but it also helps current members understand the long-term value of staying with a department.
Haruto says
A defined contribution option could give eligible non-governmental fire departments a more predictable framework to discuss benefits with current and prospective members. Since the association is responding to member requests, it would be helpful to explain participation requirements, employer contribution options, administrative costs, and what education departments will receive before enrollment. Those details would make it easier to judge whether the plan can genuinely support recruitment and retention over time.
Noah says
A defined contribution option could give eligible non-governmental fire departments a clearer, more portable way to support members over time. Since the association is responding to member requests, it would be useful to explain the likely eligibility rules, employer contribution choices, vesting, fees, and the steps departments would need to take before enrolling. Those details would help leaders judge whether the plan can genuinely strengthen recruitment and retention rather than simply add another administrative obligation. A transparent comparison with current benefit arrangements would also make the proposal easier to evaluate.

The stated focus on recruitment and retention makes the proposed contribution plan more than an administrative change. For eligible non-governmental departments, a clear benefit structure could make service commitments easier to evaluate and explain to prospective members. The investigation should also make eligibility, contribution responsibilities, investment choices, and portability easy to understand before departments decide whether participation fits their needs.
Theo says
Recruitment and retention goals make the proposed plan easier to evaluate than a general benefits discussion. Before departments decide, it would help to explain eligibility, employer and participant contributions, administrative costs, vesting, and what happens when a member changes departments. Those details let people compare the option with existing arrangements and judge its long-term value. Clear communication is especially important when the plan is being explored in response to member requests.
Leo says
A defined contribution option could address a practical gap for non-governmental fire departments if it is structured clearly and sustainably. Since the proposal responds to member requests and aims to support recruitment and retention, the next discussion should spell out eligibility, employer and employee contribution choices, fees, vesting, and administrative responsibility. Those details determine whether a plan becomes a meaningful benefit rather than another difficult obligation.
Mason says
A defined contribution option could give eligible non-governmental departments a clearer way to support long-term financial planning while preserving flexibility for local organizations. The recruitment and retention goal is especially important: benefits are often evaluated alongside pay, training, and scheduling. Clear eligibility rules, employer contribution options, fees, and education for volunteers and staff will determine whether the plan delivers meaningful value. Transparency should be central to the design.
Liam says
A defined-contribution option could be valuable if participating departments receive clear information about eligibility, contributions, fees, investment choices, and administration. Since recruitment and retention are central goals, the plan should be easy for volunteers and departments to understand rather than adding another layer of uncertainty. Comparing the proposed arrangement with existing benefits would also help members assess its practical value. Transparency will matter as much as the plan design itself.
Felix says
A defined contribution option could be meaningful for non-governmental fire departments if it is designed around clear eligibility, predictable administration, and understandable choices for participants. The stated member requests make it especially important to explain how contributions, vesting, fees, and enrollment would work before adoption. Recruitment may benefit from a plan that candidates can easily compare with other opportunities, while retention depends on whether the long-term value remains clear after employees join.
Adam says
A defined contribution option could give eligible non-governmental departments a clearer framework for discussing long-term benefits, provided the plan details are communicated plainly. The stated focus on member requests matters because retirement arrangements affect both current personnel and future applicants. Recruitment may improve when candidates can understand what is available, while retention also depends on contribution rules, vesting, fees, portability, and administrative support. Publishing those decisions alongside the investigation would help departments evaluate whether the proposed structure fits their size and staffing realities.

That sounds like a smart move for the non-government departments that are struggling to keep people around. I’m curious how a Defined Contribution Plan would compare to the current setup long term, since retention is such a big issue in volunteer and smaller departments. Also, totally random, but I ended up looking up a Minecraft Recipe right after this, so now my brain’s bouncing between fire pensions and crafting tables.
