A: Any volunteer firefighter who appears as a volunteer on the certified roster of eligible firefighters submitted to the NC State Firefighters’ Association for five consecutive fiscal years, and the last fiscal year. The state fiscal year runs from July 1st to June 30th.
Q: Why aren’t paid members of volunteer fire departments eligible for the reduced-price lifetime licenses?
A: The fee reduction on lifetime licenses was included by the General Assembly in an effort to retain volunteer firefighters. As such, this license fee reduction only applies to volunteers.
Q: I’m a volunteer firefighter. Are my family members eligible for a reduced-price lifetime license?
A: No. The license fee reduction only applies to a lifetime license for the volunteer firefighter.
Q: How do I apply for a lifetime license and get the reduced fee?
A: You must fill out an application and certification form for a lifetime license and complete the Volunteer Firefighter Lifetime License Certification Form. These documents can be found on the application and certification form on the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s website, or on the NCSFA website. Once the application and certification form are complete, the license can be obtained via mail or at the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Headquarters building in Raleigh.
Q: Who can sign the certification?
A: Your station chief or their designee must sign the certification document.
Q: If I served as a volunteer firefighter for more than 5 years but am not currently on the roster, am I eligible?
A: No, the law was intended as an incentive to retain current volunteers.
